The hosts went into the game looking to strengthen their grip on a Champions League place and close the gap on City rivals Atletico Madrid in second and they did just that with a routine win at the Bernabeu.
Real were the better side throughout, dominating possession as you would expect them to do against such opposition.
The game’s first real chance came after 18 minutes when the home side countered at pace following an Alaves corner and found themselves five on one.
Theo Hernandez spread the play out to the right for Karim Benzema, but the Frenchman lost his footing as he bore down on goal and the chance was lost.
Real continued to press but they were largely limited to long range efforts, with Gareth Bale going close to a spectacular opener with an overhead kick that dropped narrowly wide.
The visitors weren’t without chances wither, with Alfonso Pedraza being denied by a fine low save from Keylor Navas and John Guidetti calling the Costa Rican into a routine save from the edge of the box.
As the first half wore on it looked like the two sides would head in at the break level, but Alaves were to be left disappointed as Real opened the scoring just a minute before half-time.
A cross from the right dropped to the feet of Karim Benzema and he back-heeled the ball into the path of Cristiano Ronaldo to spin and fire into the bottom corner.

That goal meant that Real had the lead at half-time and they extended their advantage immediately after the restart.
Alexis sloppily gave the ball away and Real seized on the loose ball. Benzema fed Bale and the Welshman galloped forwards before slotting past Fernando Pacheco at the near post.

Benzema had a goal chalked off for offside shortly afterwards, before both Bale and Raphael Varane clipped the bar as the hosts threatened to run away with the game.
Just after the hour mark Real put the game to bed as the impressive Lucas Vazquez fed Ronaldo to sweep home his second of the game and end the match as a contest.
Real continued to threaten, particularly on the counter and they were handed the perfect way to round off the win late on as Gareth Bale was felled in the box to hand Real a penalty.
Karim Benzema took responsibility from the spot and duly placed the ball past Pacheco and into the corner to complete the scoring.

The win sees Real move four points behind second-placed Atletico Madrid, albeit having played a game more, whilst Alaves remain in 16th.
