'Los Blancos' threw away a two-goal lead against Villarreal on Saturday, to see them finish the season on their lowest points tally in 11 years, according to Spanish publication 'Marca'.
Zinedine Zidane's side finished the season with 76 points, having scored 94 goals, but whilst many sides would be delighted with such a return, a club of Real Madrid's stature always strives to be the very best.
That tally of 76 points matches the figure gained by Fabio Capello's side in 2006/07, though it was enough to claim the title on that occasion.
The last time a Madrid side claimed less points in a season was their total of 70 in 2005/06, a year in which, curiously, they also scored exactly the same amount of goals as this season.
2008/09 was the last time they scored fewer goals than the current campaign (83), whilst it was also the last time they conceded more than this season (52 to 44).
However, as the club will be well aware, a win next Saturday against Liverpool in the Champions League final in Kiev will see their league struggles forgotten.
