Although in Spain's youth set-up he is an indisputable protagonist, Borja Mayoral is not counting on playing many minutes for Real Madrid. The 'BBC' of Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo is seemingly untouchable to Zindedine Zidane who has instead chosen to overlook the young forward.
He has only played 323 minutes so far this season in 14 matches for 'Los Blancos', scoring two goals in the process. It didn't take him long to more than double that tally though, whilst playing for 'La Rojita, as his three goals steered them to a 5-3 victory on Thursday.
It brought his record to five goals in 772 minutes for the season, causing his average to become significantly better: finding the back of the net once every 154 minutes.
In fact, it's better than his team-mate Benzema. The Frenchman has scored eight times in 2,386 minutes (33 appearances): once every 298. His goalscoring prowess, or lack of, has been a constant topic of criticisim this campaign.
Going into the final months of the season, an eye for the goal will no doubt be an important asset and maybe one that Zidane should exploit more with Mayoral, especially in La Liga.
Of his 14 appearances, only eight have been as a starter and although the comparisons with Benzema are obviously odious, it could just be what the young forward needs to get his shining moment in a white shirt.
