Real Madrid's poor run of form has been dealt another blow as left-back Marcelo will miss the upcoming matches against Real Sociedad and Real Betis.
The Spanish FA has applied Article 123 concerning violence in the game.
Referee Alejandro Jose Hernandez Hernandez spotted the incident and was very clear in his reasoning for showing red.
The match report read, "In the 89th minute of the game the player (12) Vieira Da Silva Junior, Marcelo was sent off for the following reason: kick an opponent in the back, with the ball well away from the action."
The 29-year-old will be forced to watch from the sidelines with teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, who will serve the last of his five-game ban in San Sebastian, but will return to action in the Betis clash.
This suspension will not prevent Marcelo from taking in part in Madrid's opening Champions League fixture against APOEL on Wednesday evening.
Theo Hernandez will be on hand to replace the experienced defender and will be looking to impress with his opportunity for game time.
The youngster is known for his pace and could prove to be an interesting asset for Zinedine Zidane.
