Ozil has just seven months remaining on the four-year contract he signed at the Emirates following his £45.5m move from Real Madrid in 2013 and is widely expected to move on to pastures new at the end of the season.
United are one of several sides to have been linked with a move for the German, with the 29-year-old having enjoyed the best spell of his career working under 'Red Devils' boss Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.
Speaking to 'BT Sport' ahead of United's 3-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday, former England international Ferdinand said that he would be very happy to see the playmaker wearing a Manchester United shirt in the future.
'Since he (Ozil) signed in the Premier League he has had the most assists and chances created in the entire division so that tells you the standard of player he is,' Ferdinand enthused.
'I played against him when he was at Real Madrid and he was different player from what I've seen here.
'He is deceptively quick and if you can get that out of him, with the technical ability he has, then I would take him at Man United as a free transfer all day, no doubt.'
