Sergio Ramos remains the official club captain, continuing his role from last season, but considering his penchant for picking up suspensions, it is a wise move by the Zidedine Zidane to appoint more than back-up captain.
If Ramos, who has already been sent off once this season, is unable to lead his side on to the pitch, then Ronaldo will assume the role of captain. But the Portuguese star is currently serving a five-game suspension for pushing a referee during the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup.
Brazilian defender Marcelo has been named as the third captain, so he would take the armband if both Ronaldo and Ramos are unable to, but his ill-disciplined nature has also been demonstrated in the early stages of this season after being sent off for a kick out against a Levante player on Saturday.
In the rare case that all three of the previously mentioned players are unable to carry out their duties, Karem Benzema will take over, after he was named as fourth captain for Los Blancos. Benzema is the relative good boy amonst the four Madrid stars, having only been booked six times in eight seasons at the Bernabeu.
