The 27-year-old joined Hull City in 2014 and became the club's record signing, as they paid £10m for him.
'We have lost Abel for six months, which is very, very dissappointing. We wish him all the very best in his recovery and look forward to seeing him back out on the pitch as soon as possible', Hull boss Leonid Slutsky said.
The Uruguay international had to receive oxygen during his treatment by medical stuff, and he will be out for at least six months because of the ruptured Achilles.
